Jessica's Guide To Dating On The Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey

The undead can really screw up your senior year.

Marrying a vampire definitely doesn’t fit into Jessica Packwood’s senior year “get-a-life” plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth—and he’s her long-lost fiancĂ©. Armed with newfound confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions, Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war—and save Lucius’s soul from eternal destruction.

This book was definitely something that I wasn’t expecting. With a tagline fit for a chicklit and a synopsis that felt just like so many other vampire novels out there, I didn’t expect it to be so enthralling, but it was.

I loved everything about this novel; the plot, the characters, the writing- Beth Fantaskey renewed my love for vampires with Jessica’s Guide. Jessica is your average teenager, and I pleased that even with the arrival of Lucius and the shocking news of her real identity, she didn’t let go of that throughout the story. It was a great work of keeping true to the character, as Fantaskey did with Lucius as well. I hated him at first; he was arrogant, demanding and slightly creepy. With every passing chapter, we see his dark side crumble and I loved every second of it.

For a good chunk of the novel, I began to grow scared because Lucius’ stay in Jessica’s town seemed to drag. I feared that the entire story would solely revolve around whether or not Jessica accepted her fate as an important vampire princess. This changed, somewhat too quick for my liking, towards the ending. But despite the rushed plot, the ending was a non-stop thrill ride that had me squealing in shock.

This is not just another vampire book, if that’s what you’re thinking. Jessica’s Guide To Dating On The Dark Side is an emotion-stirring, page turning, and gracefully written novel that deserves to be picked out from the rest. Beth Fantaskey is an incredible writer and I look forward to reading her future titles. I definitely recommend Jessica’s Guide for any paranormal lover!
