Top Ten Tuesday: Book To Movies

Top Ten Tuesday was created and is hosted by The Broke And The Bookish. As my TBR list dwindles down, I find myself posting less and less. Until it grows again, I need something fun to post toward the beginning of the week and this seemed perfect!

This week: top ten books to movie adaptations. (In no particular order)

1. Blood & Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause.

I actually really hated the book. I don't think I eve finished it. But some friends dragged me to see the movie when it came out and I was shocked at how much I loved it. (And let's be honest, any movie with Hugh Dancy is a win)

2. What's Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. And it did more than justice to the book, probably because Peter Hedges wrote the screenplay. (which they need to hire ALL authors for) Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of Arnie is incredible; he should've won A LOT more awards than he did for that role.

3. Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.

A lot of people hated this one, but for the life of me I can't think of why. It's funny, it's cute, the CGI is ridiculously amazing (I just wanted to reach into the screen and pet Carol's fur) and I loved the indie aspect to it. I thought it was an incredible adaptation!

4. Holes by Louis Sachar.

One of my favorite books as a kid! I definitely think it adapted awesomely to the big screen. I was very happy with it!

5. Harry Potter 1-7 by J.K. Rowling.

Do I even need to write anything? The Harry Potter books/movies are both epic and that's all there is to it.

6. This Boy's Life by Tobias Wolff.

I saw this movie as a kid (my brother and I watched it sneakily. It's not exactly kid friendly) and then read the book a few years ago. If you haven't seen this movie yet, I highly recommend it. It's so powerful!

7. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer

Yes. I'm not going to defend myself for this because I actually love the Twilight series, so shut up before you even begin, haters. Anyway, I was really happy with this one. I thought the first movie was a disaster, New Moon was awesome but Eclipse was amazing. I was hoping they'd keep director David Slade for the final two movies since he did such an awesome job!

8. Coraline by Neil Gaiman.

Another one of my favorite books as a kid. I was so happy when I heard Henry Selick, who directed The Nightmare Before Christmas (which I'm pretty obsessed with) was going to be on this movie. And it turned out just as fantastic as I thought it would. Stop-motion animation was PERFECT for this book.

9. Where The Heart Is by Billie Letts.

This is another situation where I saw the movie before I read the book. Actually, I think this one of the first non-YA books that I've ever read. Anyway, I really loved both! If you haven't seen the movie, I definitely recommend going out and renting it. It's one of those lighthearted "feel good" movies.

10. The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot.

This is another one that needs no words.

  1. Great list.
I did not know that Gilbert Grape was a book.
I love a lot of these movies and books. I liked the Princess Diaries movie too. I wasn't too keen on what they did to Grandmere and Mia's father but it is a funny movie so all is forgiven.

  2. Where the Heart Is! Wonderful choice! My list includes Anywhere But Here, which is my other favorite Natalie Portman book-to-movie adaptation.

  3. I love that you included What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Haven't seen that one in awhile.
Coraline is another I really enjoyed.
We both have The Princess Diaries on our lists.
You have made me very curious to see Blood & Chocolate now.
I like that you showed the movie poster next to the book cover. Nice comparison.

  4. I really loved This Boy's Life...I had no idea it was a book, though! I didn't realize that SO many movies were based off books! I need to go back and read some of these! :)

  5. Wow, great list! I haven't heard of some of these books/movies in a while!

  6. Agreed on Harry Potter (of course) and of the Twilight movies, Eclipse as definitely been the best (film wise) so far. Can't say I agree on Coraline though....I thought the book was much better than the movie....but to each their own. ^_^ Great list!

  7. I haven't read Blood and Chocolate but I love the movie. Of course it goes without saying, the Harry Potter series (and even the Twilight series). Great choice!

    <3 Happy Reading
