Small Screen YA (2)
Switched at Birth (ABC Family)
I know I went off in a fit of rage on the internet when I discovered Jane By Design was cancelled without a proper ending. ABC Family is known for pulling the plug after one or two seasons, not giving series the chance to build a following. And because of this, I vowed not to watch shows on this channel anymore. But when I said that, I was forgetting about the awesome that is Switched at Birth. And no matter how pissed I am at the asshats that are running this channel, I HAVE to watch this show.
The premise is exactly what the title suggests - two girls, Daphne Vasquez and Bay Kennish, are accidentally switched at birth by tired, overworked nurses. After a blood-typing experiment at school, Bay discovers that she's not biologically related to her family. Her real mother, Regina, and Daphne move into the Kennish's guest house after the Kennish's hear about Regina's financial issues. There is tons of struggles though; Daphne - who became deaf as a child from a case of meningitis - finds it hard to communicate with her new family. Also, the Kennish's extreme wealth causes discomfort with Regina and Daphne.
Holy meatballs, you guys, this show is SO good. It's totally a character-based plot but the writers are doing a fantastic job because I have yet to watch a boring episode. There is such a diverse cast of characters and they all have flaws but I love pretty much all of them. Bay is my favorite. She's kind of a wild child. She loves art and takes her passion to dangerous heights at the end of the first season but she's so easy to connect with. Also, I'm a huge fan of Emmett - Daphne's childhood best friend who is also deaf - despite a lot of mistakes he makes in the first season.
I could talk for hours about this show but I think I'll just end it with this - drama, drama, drama. Also, romance. There's a lot of that. If you have Netflix or you can find it online, I totally recommend you watch the first season so you can catch up to the second one that is airing now.
And let's all cross our fingers that ABC Family doesn't cancel this show next! I'm not sure my poor heart could take it.
Switched at Birth is on Mondays at 8pm on ABC Family.
