First off, before I get to the actual content of the movie, can we take a moment to appreciate how gorgeous Nicholas Hoult is? I don't care if I loved or hated the movie, it's a well spent $10 to gaze at his beautiful mug for an hour and a half. Even when he's all zombified and bloodied.
*sigh*
Okay, I'm done.
I loved this movie. Love, love, loved it to pieces. I really enjoyed the book and I think the movie brought everything I admired most about it and added some of its own charm as well. There were a few things that I would've liked to see more of, though. The first is Perry. He has a huge role throughout the entire book and the movie kind of forgot about him in the second half. I can't say I was entirely saddened by this because Perry is played by Dave Franco and I'm not really a big fan of his (The sound of his voice makes me want to take fill myself up with Dayquil and cough drops) but a little more of him toward the end would have made things better. And I don't remember Nora being so amazing in the book but I wanted so much more of her in the movie. She was hilarious. Also - my last qualm - I miss the gutsy, kick-ass Julie from the book. While movie Julie was very badass, she just didn't have that same hardness that Julie from the book did.
Other than that, I thought the adaption was awesome. The desolated remains of the city was so creepy and seemed straight out of the novel. The bonies were absolutely terrifying. The scenes where they were sprinting had me cringing because ... ick ... so scary. And I'm so, so relieved that this movie didn't translate into something cheesy and lame. It's one thing to read about these sophisticated, developed zombies but putting them into action ... I'll admit that I was a bit nervous. But the actors did such a great job! They kept the spirit of brain-craving zombies while sucessfully portraying Isaac Marion's vision.
If you were a fan of the book, I definitely recommend you to go see this! And if you haven't read the book - still, go! It's funny, romantic, action-packed and even scary at times!
And the soundtrack is so amazing. Just thought I'd throw that in there too. There are so many great songs in this movie.

YES.
ReplyDeleteKatie, I am SOOOOO FREAKING GLAD YOU ENJOYED THIS MOVIE. No, I haven't watched it yet, but I REALLY want to. I haven't read the book either (actually, I didn't even know it was based on a book, so), but I think I might, after this review!
Thanks for sharing, Katie - you've made me all the more excited for this!
Go see it soon! And definitely read the book! They were both SO good! :)
DeleteNora was awesome in the book (if not more) - I just wish they would have kept her race the same (but this could have been because I listened to the audio). I agree about Julie too. :) LOVED it!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to read the book again! It's been a couple of years so I'm blanking on most of Nora's parts!
DeleteI can't wait to see this movie. Sounds good. Hope it's just as good as the book. :)
ReplyDeleteI ALWAYS think books are better but the movie definitely does it justice! :)
DeleteThis is all good to hear! I'm hoping to check it out soon. Thanks for the review and book comparison.
ReplyDeleteI hope you love it! :)
DeleteI saw a trailer (the first four minutes) for this movie over a month ago, and I was SO, SO, SO excited to see it. I only found out that it was a book two days ago, but I'm so glad you enjoyed the movie because it's only making me more excited for it to come out here.
