13 Nights of Halloween Books: Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick

Welcome to the start of 13 Nights of Halloween Books! It's a spin from ABC Family's 13 Nights of Halloween and just like that lineup, I'll be posting a book every night that I think is a PERFECT Halloween read!

To kick things off, I have an especially disturbing read ...

ASHES by Ilsa J. Bick!

I've had this book forever but always held off because I kept hearing how gross and brutal this book is. When I was planning this feature out, I decided to give this book a go to see if it'd make the list. And booooooy, did it ever. The book's pace is so slow but I thought it was genius paired with the TERRIFYING zombie scenes. I can remembering gasping so loudly at the first introduction of the zombies. (A campsite scene involving an old woman and two teenagers for those of you who can't quite remember ...)

But I can't just talk about how gross and disturbing it is. I also have to mention that it's incredibly well written and so engaging. I could NOT put it down. I was literally cheering for Alex at 5am because I was so involved with the story.

So if you're looking for some especially dark, disturbing (have I used this word enough already?) and HOOKING, I definitely recommend Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick! The second I finished it I ran to the computer to reserve my copies of the sequels at the library and I'm chomping at the bit (chomping ... zombies ... I'm so punny) to pick them up!

  1. YESSS! I finally recently read Ashes too and loved how gory it was, except for the scene with the zombie boy and the wild dog. That was hard to take.
